Superhuman Issue One Teaser and Contest
Events on the site will be divided up into "issues," thereby making them more comic-like. Each issue will contain chapters of the different event storylines which will rotate around a bit so you don't have to pick and choose so much between which storyline you want to be part of. The one-day-super-collectable Superhuman Issue One is just around the corner and to celebrate we have a mini event and a teaser wallpaper for you.
The mini event concerns the Alonzo crime family who rule the trade city New Carthage. That's all we know about them, so far! It's up to you to come up with a backstory for the Alonzo family. Reply to this thread with your entry in spoiler tags.
The story must be at least 500 words long. It must tell about how the Alonzo family came to New Carthage and how they gained control of it. Beyond this, anything is permitted. The three best entries will be awarded 100 points each, and the best entry will be awarded 500 points and a spot in the Superhuman lore.
The winner will be decided by a site-wide vote. Anyone can enter, but you MAY NOT vote for your own story, and you may only vote ONCE, regardless of your number of characters. Cheaters will be punished.
As for the teaser... Who are the mysterious Luminos Corporation? What is their agenda? And why are they so obsessed with this strange compound known as Adurium? It will be a while before all is revealed, but watch for their first appearance in... Superhuman Issue One!

Dear sir,
I'm afraid I've arrived at a bit of a quandary. Although the attachment relates that it has been downloaded twice as yet, it also states that I am not permitted to download attachments. I don't suppose we might rectify that, eh? Can't resist a good mystery, and I'm just dying to get my hands on this one.
Sincerly,
Cluney O'Shaughnessey

If I had the time to write a short story, I would. But I *usually* only have that much time on weekends, and that may be too late...

Well, it kind of has to stay up until we get at least one entry, because I'm sure as heck not making it up after posting this

Re: Superhuman Issue One Teaser and Contest
Fear not, dear boy, for I, Cluney, have been seeking out the deeper secrets of the Alonzo family for quite some time (One never does know when such information may come in handy). ~grin~ I am currently in the process of writing down a comprehensive account of what I have discovered. It is a tragic tale, aye, though depending on the outcome of this contest, it may turn out to be merely rumors. T'would be sad as I find the tale quite intriguing, but we shall see, eh? In any case, it is nearly complete, and I suppose I shall have the honor of offering you my findings withing the next day or so. I'll even be kind enough to allow you to see it before I am paid for my work, given the circumstances, and the general obscurity of this history.

Re: Superhuman Issue One Teaser and Contest
Wow! I'm almost afraid to post this. I was afraid, at first, that I wouldn't be able to come up with 500 words. This has well exceeded the minimum requirements. I really wanted to take both the Carthage mythos and history angle as my guideline, which meant research, and I suppose being generally long-winded, and a perfectionist doesn't help. ;^_^ Anywho, here it is!
- Alonzo Story Entry:
- Most people living in New Carthage, even those who have lived there their entire lives, believe the Alonzo family's control over the city is merely a simple step in their criminal empire. Most people also believe the registration of “capes” simply to be a means to protect the family from the heroes who might stop them. The truth is that the story goes far deeper, and is far older than most people might guess. It began in 1915 when friends and former business partners, Cyrus Argyris, and Giuseppe Alonzo founded New Carthage. They named the city in hopes that its people would be as valiant and steadfast as the irrepressible Carthaginians of the Punic wars. Little did they know, that wasn't the only similarity their city would have to its namesake.
Alonzo and Argyris had a falling out during the prohibition. Cyrus felt it was their responsibility to uphold the laws of the land, while Giuseppe considered the ban an infringement on his rights. He began to make a business of setting up speakeasy's and employing bootleggers, a move that started a long war between he and Cyrus, though both still valued their past friendship enough that they rarely involved themselves in the other's affairs.
During this time, however, something else was stirring in New Carthage. Unbeknownst to Cyrus or Giuseppe, a romance was blossoming between their two children. Ignacio Alonzo and Alyssa Argyris had met, quite by accident, at a party. Ignacio was impressed by Alyssa's stubbornness and individuality and Alyssa, also known as "Silvertongue" due to her ability to bend the wills of those around her, was charmed by Ignacio who, out of pure love, would do things for her without her ever once having to use her powers on him.
They met in secret for many months, knowing their families would not approve. During this time, Ignacio began to perceive a darkness in Alyssa, who was so used to having her own way that she often neglected to consider the needs of others. Still, he determined to soften her heart through love, and for a time there really did seem to be a change in her. Ignacio eventually realized that the only way he could be with Alyssa, indeed, the only way he could ever be truly happy would require him to cut ties with his family. He devised a plan to attend a university out of state where he would take on another name. Then he intended to find an honest job and save his money until he had enough to quietly send for Alyssa.
He presented his plans to Alyssa, but she, not wishing to leave her family's fortune behind, begged for him to reconsider. The couple argued and fought until, determined to get her own way, Alyssa used her powers on Ignacio for the very first time and made him promise never to leave her. Unfortunately, her abilities were such that they only had an effect when the recipient was in her presence. Once Ignacio came to his senses, he was livid, and refused to keep the promise he had made under Alyssa's influence.
Realizing that, powers or no powers, her demands would not get her what she wanted, Alyssa sent Ignacio a note, requesting that he meet with her in one of their favorite hideouts; a hidden distillery belonging to Giuseppe Alonzo. Hoping she'd had a change of heart, Ignacio consented to meet her.
Upon walking into the distillery, which was located in an abandoned storm shelter, Ignacio could see his love had not had a change of heart at all, that she was, in fact, very resolute in her desire. Fearing she meant to try again to use her powers on him, he reminded her that it would not work outside of her presence, and was very clear that he would hold himself unaccountable to any promises made under her influence.
"I know," she said, a note of sorrow behind her resolution "and I am sorry that it has come to this."
"Come to what?" Ignacio asked cautiously.
Alyssa smiled sadly.
"Take out your gun," she said sweetly.
She was using her powers on him, and Ignacio was utterly helpless to resist.
"You're going to kill me." he said in disbelief.
"No my love," Alyssa crowed, "nothing so simple." She turned and knocked over several bottles of moonshine, which smashed as they hit the ground.
"Don't move," she commanded as Ignacio tried to reach her.
"Alyssa," Ignacio said, his voice shaking, "what are you doing?"
He could only stand there, horrified as Alyssa drew a box of matches from her pocket.
"You see," she said, staring at the box of matches. "I can't live without you, and I know you'll leave whether I want you to or not."
"Alyssa, don't do this!" Ignacio cried, suddenly beginning to understand.
"If I die here, in this distillery," she continued, "they'll blame you. They'll throw you in prison," she grinned madly, "and then you'll never be able to leave."
"Alyssa, this is madness!"
"And the best part?" she crooned, "Our families will just keep on fighting. No one will get what they want, not you, not them, not even me."
Ignacio was in tears.
"No! Please Alyssa, don't do this! I love you!"
"And I you," she replied, grinning manically, "don't you see? This is the only way I can keep you from leaving."
"Alyssa," Ignacio pleaded.
Alyssa smiled at him warmly as she lit the match.
… and then she ordered him to shoot her.
When they found him later, Ignacio was sitting near the remains of the door to the storm cellar, clutching his knees with one arm and staring, just staring at his hand, the hand that had killed his love.
As Alyssa had supposed, Ignacio was accused and put to trial for her apparent murder. And how could anyone believe otherwise while Ignacio just sat there, saying nothing at all in his defense? He just continued to stare at his hand, as if it somehow didn't belong to him. Being entirely incapable of any defense on his own part, Ignacio was found incompetent to stand trial and sent to a mental institution where he eventually died of a broken heart, and a broken mind.
There are few things more dangerous than a grieving father, so it is little wonder that this matter did what no amount of disagreements could, it destroyed, for once and all, any semblance of the friendship Cyrus and Giuseppe had once shared. Cyrus sought revenge by destroying Giuseppe's work at any cost, and Giuseppe slandered the name of his daughter, firmly believing her to be at fault for his son's indiscretions. Finally, unable to bear living in the city that had destroyed his son, Giuseppe moved his family and business affairs to another city.
Even after Giuseppe Alonzo was long dead, the memory of the Argyris's betrayal lived on in the minds of his descendants. Many years later, the Alonzo family had moved from bootlegging to a lucrative business in drug and arms dealing. Head of the family, the aptly named Scipio Alonzo, was unsatisfied and sought to close the door on his family's shame by conquering New Carthage. Many had tried before him, but Scipio was subtle, and through shrewd bargaining, blackmail, bribery, whatever it took, he overtook the city, business by business. The final victory was the corruption of the police department. Finally, after generations of failure, New Carthage was in the hands of its rightful heirs. And so it has been ever since...
